Dying those Easter Eggs?

Czech Easter Eggs

Czech Easter Eggs

Did you know that Kraslice is the Czech word for Easter Eggs?  I didn’t and I’m half Czech.  I have to admit these traditional Czech eggs above are truly some of the most beautiful.  These are hand painted or decorated with the smallest pieces of straw, onion peels, bee wax, etc.  There really are countless techniques of decorating, each requiring a certain level of skill and artistry.  Historically, girls decorated the eggs and gave them to boys they liked on Easter Monday.  The early Czechs believed that when you were born a star was born that protects you during your lifetime, when you die your star falls.  Used as a symbol it must have eight points. Later it became a symbol of Christ. You will note on the eggs pictured above the stars have eight points.  The lace borders on the eggs and the harrow are for protection.  The cross was used as a union of upper and lower worlds, tree branches for growth and dots for abundance.  I only wish I had the time and skill to make these beautiful Kraslice, maybe next year.  For now, I will just dip my eggs in the fizzy colored water and with any luck it will come out looking something like an Easter Egg.
